“I’m Leaving” – Six Tips to Help You Give Notice

There comes a time in your career where you end up accepting a new position while still gainfully employed. You need to be professional and respectful when informing your current company about your pending move. Giving notice isn’t something to send out as an email the day before you start your new job — enough notice must be given.

There are other courtesies you need to consider as well. Remember, the technology world is small and you never know when you’ll cross paths with a former boss. Here are a few tips to help ensure the process goes smoothly for you as well as your soon-to-be former employer.

Go Over Your Employee Handbook and Original Offer Letter

Before giving notice, it is a good idea to review your employee handbook and offer letter to check out any esoteric rules regarding terminating your employment. The important thing is not break these rules, especially if they involve a noncompete clause.

Give Two Weeks’ Notice at the Minimum

Giving at least two weeks’ notice remains the standard when informing an employer you are leaving for a new job — a longer period is also acceptable if possible. If your current boss lets you go early, spend the extra time getting ready for your new position.

Provide Notice in Writing, but Still Meet Face-to-Face

Provide your notice in writing — either an email or word processing document should suffice; however, speak with your boss in person to give them the news. The important thing is to stay on good terms with them — remember what we said about the small technology world.

Do Whatever Is Asked During Your Last Two Weeks

If your boss wants you to train your replacement before leaving, do so with enthusiasm. Don’t leave your soon-to-be ex-co-workers in a bind. Keep in mind your professional network and potential future references.

Leave Your Projects in a Good Place

Don’t leave any loose ends on any projects for which you are responsible. Put in the extra effort documenting your responsibilities. Make them really miss you when you are gone!

Don’t Ever Be an Arrogant Jerk

Even if you didn’t enjoy working there, don’t be a jerk when you are on your way out the door. Always take the high road and keep an air of professionalism.
