Sleep Deprivation: How to Get the Most Out of Your Rest

Staying productive at the office is a must for any professional, but it’s especially the case for IT workers. Software engineering, Cloud administration, and data science are just three of many tech roles requiring a focused mindset each and every day. As such, not getting enough sleep makes it difficult for technology professionals to keep their mind on work.

With an eye towards improving your productivity at work, here are a few insights on how to get the most out of your rest. Leverage the ideas to improve your mental and physical health, while simply being better at your job. Your managers will thank you!

Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

When sleeping, it’s important to get as much rest as possible. While that seems like an obvious statement, some spend most nights tossing and turning instead of a truly restful experience. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), there are four major indicators of a good night’s sleep. These include:

  • Sleeping at least 85 percent of the time you are in bed.
  • Falling asleep in less than 30 minutes after going to bed.
  • Never waking up more than once per night.
  • Awakening for less than 20 minutes after falling asleep each night.

Additionally, strive to get at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep every night. Accomplishing this helps you feel more rested; boosting your productivity level every day, either at the office or on the weekend.

Take a Brisk Lunchtime Walk

Short bursts of exercise or other physical activity help you fight the effects of sleep deprivation. During your lunch hour, go for a quick walk around your office park or a local shopping center. This helps you feel refreshed and ready for the second half of your workday.

Improve Your Posture

Keeping good posture when working at your desk helps you get the most from the previous night’s sleep. Sit up straight and resist any tendency to slouch in your chair, especially when feeling tired – as that only exacerbates the problem. Many technology professionals orient their work area so they are able to stand while working. Consider this approach to keep you alert and focused on your daily task list.

In short, getting a good night of quality rest is the most important factor in keeping sleep deprivation to a minimum.
