How to Pitch Your Company When Interviewing Top Talent

December 5th, 2014

When you’re trying to win over top talent, remember that you are selling your company and the opportunity to the customer – your candidate. Keep in mind the “What’s in it for me?” factor to give him the information he needs to make his decision.

Be Prepared To State Your Case

Competition is tough for top prospects. Chances are that he will be weighing multiple offers. Make yours the most attractive.

Sell The Big Picture

Don’t focus exclusively on compensation. Include factors such as career path, working environment and interesting work. Communicate how the position fits into the organization as a whole.

Benchmark Against The Competition

You should have an idea what companies the candidate could be interviewing with. Weigh what your company offers against what others do. Emphasize areas where you beat the competition. Improve the areas you lack.

Provide Room To Grow

Don’t offer a candidate a position that is exactly what they are doing now. Star talent will not be satisfied with the status quo. Challenging positions are usually just outside the comfort zone of desirable employees.

Know Your Stuff

Familiarize yourself with the position or bring in an interviewer who knows it well. Only someone who understands the benefits and challenges of the role can adequately represent it to your candidate.

Treat The Candidate Like A Person

If you want to show him how he will fit in with your team, take the time to get to know his interests and goals. Find out what matters to the candidate so that you can emphasize common interested. There is no point on giving him the hard sell on factors that don’t matter to him.

Ask open-ended questions:

  • What do you like or dislike about your current employer?
  • What criteria will you use to evaluate any offers?
  • Describe your long-range career strategy.

This will give you ammunition to use when negotiating the offer.

Talk To Your Team

Ask your current employees what the selling points of the company are to them, and for your most recent hires, ask what made them choose you over the competition.
